CABARROGUIS, Quirino, (PIA)—For exemplifying excellence in disaster risk reduction and management and humanitarian assistance, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) made it to the top 3 national finalists for the 2018 Gawad Kalasag Award under the Provincial DRRMC category.

Quirino is one of the three local government units nationwide that were shortlisted for the national award, along with Dinagat Islands in CARAGA region and the province of Pampanga which emerged as the top winner.

During the national validation, Director Dante Balao of the Office of the Civil Defense lauded the province for ensuring preparedness and safety of the people through the development and implementation of innovations.

Governor Junie Cua, PDRRMC chairman, in his presentation of the good practices of the province, dubbed, “Disaster Risk Reduction Management: the Quirino Way,” highlighted the province’s efforts in building resilience in the people by helping them protect their source of livelihood thru integrated farming model.

“All activities undertaken in all these projects are leading into different enterprises that will augment the income of farmers hence, improving the quality of their lives to make them more adaptive and resilient with the changing climate,” Cua said.

Furthermore, Cua said a genuine commitment from upland farmers in environmental conservation and protection can only be attained if the people will be able to sustain their basic needs through the Integrated Farm Model.

He said the Council has dedicated members and volunteers whose collaborative efforts are towards investment in preparedness, safeguarding a disaster-prepared and climate-resilient province and ensuring that the principles of sustainable development are strictly adhered to.

The PDRRMC adheres to the following strategies for sustainable development: Transparent and Participatory Governance, People Empowerment, Well-informed communities, Climate-proofed vital infrastructures, Proper Equipage and Preventive Measures.

“Because of this principle and commitment, the council had numerous accomplishments along the four thematic areas on Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Disaster Response and Disaster Rehabilitation and Recovery,” Cua said. (MDCT/TCB/PIA 2-Quirino)
