TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Dec. 17 (PIA) – – The Department of Agriculture (DA) in Region 2 is promoting industrial crop production to help boost regional economy and ensure food security of the growing population in the region.

Engineer Rodolfo Bayucan, chief of the Cagayan Valley Research Center, said they are introducing high value commercial crops to farmers and other interested individuals that include various fruits and vegetables.

He said they also promote modern technologies in agriculture to make farming easier and faster.

“We need to support food production to counter the effects of climate change and address the issue of decreasing production area, and ensure food security,” Bayucan said.

He said high value commodities such as pineapple, mango, coffee, banana and cacao show good performance in terms of production in the region while dairy is seen as a developing industry.

“Cagayan Valley is endowed with rich agricultural resources that support farmers and fisherfolk n the agricultural enterprises,” Bayucan added.

Aside from capacity building for corn and palay farmers, the DA is also introducing urban gardening and trainings on hydrophonics, a method of growing plants without soil but use mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent.

Bayucan urged the public to help improve farming strategies in Cagayan Valley and support agricultural development programs of the government to contibute in the enhancement of the region’s economy. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
